Tomavinos delivered the best pizza in a contest between ten pizzerias in August 2006, according to the Chronicle Herald newspaper..Tomasinos makes its dough and sauce from scratch and offers exotic ingredients and, although their pizzas are the most expensive, you can count on standing in line on Friday night.

Walking up the sidewalk to Tomavinos Pizzeria and Cellar Ristorante, you’re greeted by a complex combination of aromas wafting through the air. Our appetizer, the focacia, provided a clue as to the rest of the meal. The heaping basket of roasted bread brought to our table was topped as asiago, mozzarella and parmesan cheeses, fresh basil and olive oil. …Another of our group ordered Ambrosia – sauteed mushrooms, Italian sausage and fresh spinach. This particular pizza has such a hold on this diner that Tomavino could serve nothing else and she’d never notice.
Tomavinos Pizza on South Street was the top pick of two of our judges in the Daily News Best Pizza Contest– Linda Dean and Doug MacKay. MacKay loved the sauce, calling it “fantastic.” Pam Berman also liked this pizza: “looked good, tasted good.”
